Art Series:
Introduction to Creating Altered Books—with You As the Theme
Making art reduces stress. Besides the fact that I find it fun and enjoy sharing my creative perspective on things, I make art to relax, flow, de-stress and heal. Regardless of your art-making abilities, at least 45 minutes of the activity will significantly lessen the stress in your body—measured by cortisol levels—according to a Drexel University study.
One of my favorite art genres is the altered book. It is a form of mixed media art in which the creator—you— change a book from its original form into something different. You alter the appearance or intended meaning of the book. This may be done by cutting, collage, painting or other means to change or transform the book in some way. It can be as complex as adding pull-out drawers that you build into glued-together pages to highlighting certain words in the text on a page in some way to create new meaning.
The theme will be YOU. What is it that you want people to know about you? What legacy can you create in this special book for future generations?
Join me at Michael’s in Pelham Manor on three Tuesdays, June 18th, 25th and July 2nd from 6pm to 8:30pm, as we create altered books with a theme that centers on a subject you know pretty well—YOU.
